Sidewalks Look Simple. A Lot Aren't.
Sidewalks and walkways look simple, and a lot of them aren't — especially in Wichita Falls, where anything in a public right-of-way has city and TxDOT standards attached, and where the same expansive red clay that heaves driveways shifts walkways too. Add the freeze-thaw winters, and a walk poured without air-entrained concrete starts spalling at the edges within a few seasons.
There's also a lot of old concrete out there. A big share of Wichita Falls neighborhoods went in between the 1950s and the 1970s, and their original sidewalks are at end of life — scaled surfaces, tipped panels, trip edges that mail carriers and morning walkers have memorized. Front-walk and sidewalk replacement on those streets is some of the most common flatwork we do.
We pour three kinds of sidewalk work: residential (front walk from driveway to porch, backyard paths, garden walks), commercial (retail frontage, parking lot connectors, ADA-compliant paths along Kell Blvd and Southwest Pkwy), and public-frontage (city sidewalk replacements and new-construction walks where the property owner is responsible for the right-of-way work).
Residential Walkways
- Front walkways — driveway-to-porch, 3–4 ft wide, 4″ thick with rebar or fiber mesh, broom finish standard.
- Backyard walkways — garden paths, pool connectors, walkways from patio to shed or shop.
- Curved and decorative walks — poured with flexible forms, often stamped or exposed aggregate.
- Stepping-stone pours — individual 24″x24″ pads with mulch or grass between.
Commercial and Public Sidewalks
When a sidewalk fronts a business or sits in a city right-of-way, published standards apply:
- TxDOT Item 531 — sidewalks, ramps, and curb ramps. Minimum 4 feet wide. Standard 4″ thick, 6″ at driveway crossings.
- Curb-and-gutter details — poured to the applicable city or TxDOT standard section.
- ADA compliance — walkway grade of 5% or less, cross-slope of 2% or less, curb ramps with truncated-dome detectable warning strips at street crossings.
Mix, Reinforcement, and Joints
- Residential walk: 3,000 PSI air-entrained, 4″ thick, fiber mesh or rebar.
- Commercial walk: 3,600 PSI air-entrained, 4–6″ thick, rebar each way.
- ADA ramps: 4,000 PSI, heavier bar on tighter centers — higher spec because of ramp bending stress.
- Curb approaches: 4,000 PSI, 6″ thick where vehicles cross.
Air-entrainment isn't optional on any of it. Wichita Falls winters bring ice storms and repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and un-entrained sidewalk concrete is exactly where spalling shows up first — thin sections, exposed edges, standing water. It's a line item that costs almost nothing at the plant and saves the surface for decades.
Control Joints
Sidewalks crack — the job is to control where. Standard tooled or saw-cut control joints every 4 feet on 3-foot walks, 5 feet on 4-foot walks, 6 feet on 5-foot and wider. Joints go to a quarter of the slab depth minimum.
Wichita Falls-Specific Considerations
- Isolation joints — where walks abut curbs, foundations, or older adjacent concrete, we install a compressible expansion strip so each slab moves independently through the clay's swell-shrink cycle and the winter freeze-thaw.
- Clay subgrade — same issue as driveways: compacted, moisture-conditioned base under every walk. Skip it and panels tip within a few wet-dry cycles.
- Drainage — walkways get a cross-slope so water sheds. Standing water freezes in winter and pits the surface.

Pricing & Common Problems
Walkway and sidewalk pricing runs on the same logic as driveways — square footage, thickness, demolition, and access set the number, and longer runs cost less per foot than short ones. As a frame of reference, flatwork replacement in North Texas typically lands in the same neighborhood as driveway work (the $6–$11 per square foot range, with small or hard-access jobs above it and long simple runs below). ADA ramps and curb work are quoted per site, because the forming and detail work varies more than the concrete does. Every job gets a fixed written price after we measure.
Common Problems
- Tree-root heaving — mature trees near sidewalks push panels up over time. Root barrier at replacement, plus added depth and clearance where the tree stays.
- Settlement at driveway crossings — we spec 6″ thickness at these crossings, always.
- Edge spalling — almost always un-air-entrained concrete plus winter ice, or rock-salt de-icer. Both preventable.
How thick should my walkway be?
4″ residential, 6″ at driveway crossings and anywhere vehicles roll over it.
Do I need a permit to replace my sidewalk in Wichita Falls?
Work in the public right-of-way generally needs city approval. We'll flag it during the site walk; the permit process runs through the city before the pour.
Why is my old sidewalk flaking apart?
Usually freeze-thaw spalling — moisture in the surface freezing and popping the finish off, made worse by rock-salt de-icers. Old walks around here were often poured without air-entrained mix. Replacement concrete gets entrained air so it doesn't repeat.
Can I put ice melt on new concrete?
Wait 30 days minimum. Then use sand or magnesium-based products, never rock salt or calcium chloride.
How long before I can walk on it?
3 days foot traffic, 28 days full cure.
